Every year on September 20, Azerbaijan marks the Day of Oilmen - professional holiday of workers of oil and gas sector. On 16 August 2001 the the former president of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev signed a decree under which September 20 is marked as the Day of Oilmen in Azerbaijan. The celebration of this day is timed to the signing of the contract on production sharing with respect to exploration and development of offshore oil and gas fields "Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli" (ACG), located in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian sector, signed on September 20, 1994 between the 13 known oil companies (BP, SOCAR, "Amoco", "McDermott", "Unocal", "LUKoil", "Statoil", "Exxon", TPAO, "Pennzoil", "Itochu", "Ramco", "Delta") of 8 countries (Azerbaijan, United States, Great Britain, Turkey, Norway, Japan, Russia and Saudi Arabia.
The historical roots of the relations between Romania and Azerbaijan go back to the XV century. At that time, Ruler of Aggoyunlu State had inked agreement with Stefan the Great. In the 90s of the last century, when Azerbaijan proclaimed its independence for the second time in the history, Romania was one of the first countries to recognize Azerbaijan's independence. Today SOCAR has become a worldwide brand by implementing major and international projects in Azerbaijan as well as beyond its borders. SOCAR significantly contributes to Europe's energy security while diversifying routes and sources of energy to this continent. SOCAR is also playing active role in the European Union's energy supply, which is provided by the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan and Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum oil and gas pipelines, as well as in the construction "Southern Gas Corridor", TAP and TANAP projects which will be completed in the near future and will change the energy map of Europe. SOCAR is 100% state-owned company in Azerbaijan. All energy related affairs between Romania and Azerbaijan are coordinated and carried out by SOCAR, such as bringing gas from the Caspian Basin to Romania.
Having entered in to the Romanian market in 2007, has achieved very big success. In 2011, SOCAR Petroleum SA was founded and started commercial activities under the SOCAR brand. During this year our Company has invested in Romania in the amount of 64 million euros, put into operation 38 fuel stations, currently, company employs 500 people. SOCAR Romania will continue its investment projects in 2018.
